For the analysis of 3 posters, I decided to do the correlating poster to the digipaks I analysed in another post. Therefore I will be analysing: The XX, EDEN & Muse.
This is a poster for the band “The XX”. They have a pretty hypnotic, minimalist and washed out sound which is represented very well in the above poster. This would be a large format poster used on walls throughout the city where their shows were held and would attempt to trap the viewers eyes as soon as they glance at it. Upon first seeing this poster your eyes are instantly drawn and it is hard to look away. This is good as it will engage people and make them want to read the information it has to offer.
The image used is fairly simple, XX one X overlaid onto the other. This poster is very simple and doesn’t feature the artist on the poster, therefore it lacks branding however this name alone is enough to sell their music.
The bands listeners would be able to identify the imagery because of the way “The XX” sounds. It would feel familiar to them but it would still pull the eyes of people who hadn’t heard of them before. There is an incredibly limited amount of print on this poster. Basic colour treatment of black and white and the use of white space plays a key role in why this poster is successful. There isn’t very much to process, but it’s visually intricate enough to make your eyes stutter. This poster also helps to create an image for the band as they are well known for catchy and almost hypnotic music. Therefore this post accurately depicts what the band is about which is great as people who haven’t heard the band previously will have an insight as to what the show or band entails.
This is the tour poster for EDEN’s ‘Futurebound Tour’. This poster is linked to the album ‘i think you think too much of me’ which I analysed in the digipak post. As stated in the digipack analysis EDEN is extremely well know for his distorted, washed out music that saddens audiences with meaningful lyrics and storylines. Therefore this poster accurately shows this. This the minimalistic colour scheme and grainy image it sums up EDENs music and helps to advertise the tour. This would be a large format poster used on walls throughout the cities in which he is touring to, including America & Amsterdam. The poster will have been designed to catch the viewers eyes as soon as they glance at it. The Font for the tour locations and dates are quite small and help depict the locations. This is because EDEN is a fairly small artist and all of the venues he played at were fairly small (I was lucky enough to see him in Manchester). This poster also helps to create an image for EDEN as he as well known for his sometimes dark and engaging music. Therefore this poster tells viewers what he is about as it is dark and minimal, but ultimately it catches the viewers eye and successfully advertises his tour. The image he has chosen for the poster is a side on shot of himself that has been made transparent and filled with a crowd of people. This further emphasises the idea that this is a tour poster as the cheering crowd is something you will see at his shows. This helps advertise both the concert and also the artist himself.
This is the tour poster for Muse’s ‘Drones World Tour’. This poster is linked to the album ‘Drones’ which I analysed in the digipak post. As stated in the digipack analysis Muse is extremely well know for their upbeat rock songs that tell real world stories that engage the audience. Muse are a bold band and have don’t things that haven’t been done before. For example on their drones tour, (Which I have been to) they were the first band ever to fly drones around the stadium. This had never been done before due to health and safety concerns, however, Muse did it. Their Bold name is shown on the poster in large letters and red font which is usually associated with danger. The overall poster has a red hue to it which also suggests the band are thrilling, the dark shadows cast over band suggest a sense of isolation or it could indicate that their music may contain some darker elements with some listeners may find distressing. Muse are known for being one of the best live performers in music, therefore, having a bold poster like this helps them to convey their message. Like the other posters, this poster also helps to create an image for Muse as the overall theme tell viewers what the band is like & promotes their music, but ultimately the poster was designed for their world tour and it catches the viewers eye and successfully advertises the tour. Like the EDEN poster this one also features an image of the artists and directly shows what they look like which helps audiences to understand the type of music they create based on clothing etc.
